Man gets second heart implanted to save life

February 22, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
A 36-year-old man in San Diego was near death, but he survived and now has two hearts beating in his chest.

Tyson Smith was born with a condition that gradually enlarged his heart.

High blood pressure in his lungs made a normal heart transplant impossible.

So doctors at the University of California, San Diego, attached a piggy-back heart.

Both hearts now pump together.
