Gunfire exchange with deputies kills IE man

WRIGHTWOOD, Calif.

Sheriff's deputies were called to a residence on the 900 block of Partridge Rd. in Wrightwood Sunday at about 3:43 p.m. to investigate a man's well-being. Someone reported the man was possibly suicidal.

Deputies and a California Highway Patrol officer attempted to make contact with the man, Jeffrey Street, 53, but they received no answer at the door.

Street then allegedly began shooting from within the residence at the officers. Officers returned fire.

A Sheriff's department SWAT team arrived, but no further contact was made with Street.

A search warrant was obtained and SWAT members made entry into the residence, where they found Street dead, apparently from a gunshot wound sustained from the earlier exchange of gunfire.

Homicide investigators were investigating the incident, standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.
