The movie finished No. 1 at the box office this weekend with $38 million.
It features Johnny Depp as the voice of the chameleon sheriff, Rango.
This is the first animated film from Industrial Light & Magic, which is the special effects studio founded by George Lucas.
"The Adjustment Bureau," starring Matt Damon, finished second with just under $21 million.
In third, was "Beastly," taking in $10.1 million.
Rounding out the top five are the raunchy comedy "Hall Pass" and the animated film "Gnomeo and Juliet."
