ABC7 viewers donate more than $621K to Japan relief fund

March 14, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
ABC7 partnered with the Red Cross Monday for a relief drive to raise money for the victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Members of the ABC7 Eyewitness News team were at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and Angel Stadium in Anaheim all day long to take donations. We want to thank eveyone who came out, all donations - large and small - were greatly appreciated. In total, ABC7 viewers donated more than $621,859.00 to the disaster relief fund.

Thousands of people from all over Southern California came by to help, opening their hearts and wallets. Viewers who stopped by drove away with even bigger smiles, happy to help in any way.

An elderly woman from Anaheim, who has family in Japan, donated $1,000 to help those affected by the massive quake and tsunami. Two others who came by Angel Stadium later in the day also donated $1,000.

"It's great that we can pull together and do something to help each other, not because we're Japanese or not because we're Americans but because we can help each other and we should," said Tony Garcia.

"There's nothing I could do with that money that would be more important than what it could be used for in Japan," said Matt Stannard.

Little kids emptied their piggy banks, giving all the allowance they've saved up to help other children and families who are need of food and shelter. Everest College in Alhambra held a raffle to raise money for the fundraiser, and a group of 7th graders from the El Monte School District gave all of the coins they had in their pockets.

All donations will be given to the Japanese Red Cross Society to provide food, shelter, water, medicine, and all other life essentials to the quake and tsunami victims.

"We feel for the Japanese people and their plight, it's been so horrific," said Stanley Perdue, CEO of the American Red Cross Orange County Chapter.

Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles, Junichi Ihara, said he was very moved by the outpouring of support for his homeland.

"We are very grateful for the generous support, kind words and all the sympathy given by the American people," he said.

If you weren't able to make it to one of the fundraiser locations, you can still donate.
