Many are using the Internet to try and figure out if their family members survived the disasters.
Companies are getting involved in aiding the people search in Japan. AT&T is offering free calls and text messages between U.S. and Japanese residents. Also, Google has launched a person-finder program to help the searching process.
Families living near Los Angeles' Little Tokyo area have jumped online to conduct people searches and scour posted images.
Los Angeles resident Johnnie Iwabuchi searched online for his extended family members who live in Sendai, one of the hardest hit areas. Fortunately, after days of searching, the Iwabuchi family received word that their loved ones in Japan were OK.
Thousands are still unaccounted for in Sendai, and aid has been slow to arrive because the port city was unreachable after the tsunami.
