Prosecutors said Marvin Mercado was a "shot caller" for the Asian Boyz gang.
The murders were committed 15 years ago primarily in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys.
Two of his victims were rival gang members, but the rest just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Mercado was arrested in 2007.
He had been living under an assumed name in the Philippines.
