The child was brought into John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio with injuries consistent with child abuse on Saturday.
Officials say the child was in the care of 23-year-old Adan Diaz Orozco before being admitted to the hospital.
Doctors determined that the child had received serious head trauma and was airlifted to Loma Linda Hospital for further treatment.
Riverside County Sheriff's Department officials said hospital workers spotted signs of child abuse. And upon further investigation, Orozco was arrested and booked into the Indio jail for suspicion of child abuse.
