Spielberg said the two time Academy Award winner was his first choice to portray what he calls the "fragility and complexity" of Lincoln's wife.
Daniel Day Lewis has already been cast as Lincoln.
Shooting begins this fall, with the movie due out in 2012.
Field currently plays Nora Walker in the ABC drama series, "Brothers and Sisters."
