Judge delays trial of Michael Jackson doctor

May 2, 2011 12:18:28 AM PDT
A Los Angeles judge delayed the trial on Monday for the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death to give the defense time to counter new prosecution experts.

Dr. Conrad Murray's attorneys asked for a delay in the start of the trial, saying they need more time to review reports from two new witnesses.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor says "the need for fundamental fairness" requires a delay. He didn't say how long.

Jury selection will begin on Sept. 8 with new prospective jurors to fill out lengthy questionnaires. Current jurors will be excused. Opening statements are expected to begin later in September.

Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Jackson.
