More than 500 positions could be eliminated from the sheriff's department.
If the Riverside County Board of Supervisors gives final approval to proposed budget cuts, the sheriff's department would cut patrols and drop several task forces, including ones dealing with gangs and drugs.
A reduction in jail staff would also eliminate 800 inmate beds, which could increase overcrowding and force more early releases.
If the budget is cut, the layoffs would take effect in July.
