Rare black lion tamarin monkey born at UK zoo

An endangered baby black lion tamarin monkey has been bred in a United Kingdom zoo, the first to have been born outside its native Brazil for eight years.

The male baby monkey was delivered by a Caesarean section at Durrell Conservation Trust, a wildlife park on the island of Jersey.

It was named Francisco after the head of the veterinary department, Fancisco Javier Lopez, who delivered him. Its parents are mother Roxanne and father Fluffy, both from the Jersey zoo.

The black lion tamarin species is threatened by the shrinking of its original habitat in the Brazilian forests.
