Fla. man jumps on top of gator to save dog

PALM CITY, Fla.

Gary Murphy was working on his boat when he heard his dog Doogie barking in distress, so he leapt into action to find him. Murphy found his 11-year-old West Highland terrier in the jaws of an alligator.

The 72-year-old man threw himself on top of the gator and started punching it in the head.

"I immediately thought 'Man, that gator is not getting my dog,' and I come running over, and I jumped over the rope and landed right on top of the gator," Murphy said.

The alligator opened its mouth, and Doogie took off running.

Doogie has some puncture wounds to his belly but is expected to make a full recovery.

Murphy says he's not a hero - he's just a guy protecting his dog.
