'Dancing With The Stars' contestant Chelsea Kane promotes charity for dogs

LOS ANGELES

"To help out any puppy in the world--and I'll probably go home with one-- just seemed like such an obvious and easy step," said Kane.

Kane hosted a kick-off party Wednesday for a new charity campaign called "Every Dog Deserves." Throughout the entire month of June, Pedigree is donating 100,000 pounds of dog food to shelters all over the country.

"The way you can get involved is you can go to Pedigree's Facebook page or their Twitter," said Kane. "Any kind of shout out to Pedigree equals one pound of dog food for a dog that needs it. I just tweeted, and it was that easy."

Wednesday's event will benefit The Amanda Foundation, a local non-profit organization that rescues dogs and cats and helps place them in loving homes.

"Our pets need good nutrition, so we're thrilled. They gave us a year's worth of food," said Teri Austin of The Amanda Foundation. "Our shelter alone got 10,000 pounds. We're feeding 100 animals any given day. This was a sizable donation. We're grateful to have it."

Kane said she's very happy to help.

"To take one thing off their plate is the least we can do," said Kane.
