Judge allows San Diego 4th of July fireworks

June 5, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
Fireworks shows in San Diego can go forward this Fourth of July after a judge delayed a strict new law on the displays.

The law would make fireworks shows subject to environmental review under California's Environmental Quality Act. The law covered charity runs, block parties, birthday parties and weddings at city parks.

However, event organizers said that's an unnecessarily tough requirement.

Debate on this particular issue started over a Fourth of July show in La Jolla.

That city's attorney plans to approach state lawmakers to create exemptions.
