Man fatally shot while riding bike in North Hollywood

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES

Officials said they believe they're searching for five or six suspects involved in the deadly shooting that happened on the 6800 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard at around 1:40 a.m. Monday.

When police arrived, they found the body of a man in his early 20s with a single gunshot wound to his upper torso.

At the same time this was going on, a sheriff's deputy who was patrolling the area where the body was found saw several people jump into a white van and take off. The deputy pursued the van, but lost sight of it.

"The deputy who saw the van was working by himself, and it's very difficult to pursue somebody when you're by yourself. He did lose it temporarily, but while he was chasing the van, we were calling LAPD helicopters on scene," said Det. Richard Wheeler of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The van was located by a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter on Sherman Way and Tyrone Avenue. Police said they know who the van is registered to and that it was not reported stolen.

Authorities also are investigating at a parking garage of an apartment building near where the shooting occurred.

Anyone with information was urged to call /*Los Angeles*/ police at (877) LAPD-24-7.
