State Assembly passes bill allowing gas stations to ask for zip codes

June 7, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
A bill to let gas stations ask for credit card customers' zip codes has passed the California State Assembly.

The bill's author said the zip codes work to provide a layer of protection for consumers and businesses to prevent fraud.

The bill was drafted after the state Supreme Court ruled that retailers' recording of zip codes can violate a customer's right to privacy.

The court sided with a customer who claimed Williams-Sonoma was selling the zip codes to marketing services.
