Tom Cruise posted a photo of himself on Twitter on Friday as fictional rock star Stacee Jaxx from "Rock of Ages," the upcoming movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.

The 48-year-old actor is barely recognizable with tattoos, long hair, tight black jeans and carved abdominal muscles. The photo included the caption, "LIVE TO ROCK! Your FIRST glance at Tom rocking out as Stacee Jaxx on the #RockOfAgesMovie Set."

"His character has elements of Axl Rose, Keith Richards and Bret Michaels," director Adam Shankman told USA Today in a recent interview. "We did a huge amount of research on what people were going through in this period... I knew a lot of these people because my dad was a music business manager."

Shankman also posted the photo on his Twitter account, adding that it was taken from the first day of shooting and linking fans to the new "Rock of Ages" Facebook page.

In the movie, Cruise's character is a rock star at the top of his career. The actor will sing Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive," Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and Scorpions' "Rock You Like a Hurricane." He is also a part of other numbers including Foreigner's "I Wanna Know What Love Is" and Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'"

The all-star "Rock of Ages" cast also includes Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand, "Watchmen" actress Malin Akerman, "Pretty Little Liars" actor Diego González Boneta, "Dancing With the Stars" professional Julianne Hough, Mary J. Blige and "Breaking Bad" actor Bryan Cranston.

Brand recently tweeted a photo of him and Baldwin in character, both sporting long locks and vintage costumes.

Shankman, who also directed the musical film re-make of "Hairspray," announced on his Twitter that "Rock of Ages" would be released on June 1, 2012.

The film will be based off the hit Broadway musical which featured classic 80s hair rock hits from bands like Journey, Bon Jovi, and Twisted Sister. The Broadway musical starred "American Idol" alum Constantine Maroulis.
