Dr. Marianne Cinat was found on Saturday in her backyard swimming pool in Rossmoor, an unincorporated community in western Orange County.
Firefighters pronounced the 45-year-old dead shortly after she was found.
The coroner's office is investigating. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
A spokesperson for the UC Irvine Medical Center said the hospital's "community is devastated by this loss."
