The incident happened Monday at Kipu Falls on the island of Kauai.
Santhosh Heddese, 35, had apparently just jumped from the waterfall and was swimming in the pool below when he suddenly went underwater and never resurfaced.
Rescuers found his body at the bottom of the pool.
The waterfall is a popular tourist attraction despite being considered extremely dangerous by the locals.
