Murdered teen Norma Lopez remembered by loved ones

MORENO VALLEY, Calif.

A memorial walk took place at 7:30 p.m. to remember the teen and to put the spotlight back on the unsolved murder.

The walk ended at Valley View High School where Lopez would have been a senior this year, and doves were released in her memory.

Lopez disappeared after walking home from summer school classes. Her body was discovered five days later near a dirt road in a remote area of east Moreno Valley.

Friday's event also puts an emphasis on teen safety, and teens were asked to sign a pledge that they will not walk alone.

"We want to remember the children that we've lost, especially Norma, one year ago," said La Donna Jempson from Norma Lopez Task Force. "So what we're doing is we're emphasizing the importance of activities for the youth and keeping our youth safe. So in remembering Norma, in emphasizing the students to take the pledge to be safe, we're hoping that we can get the word out."

Lopez's murder remains unsolved. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Moreno Valley Police Department at 877-242-4345.
