$3K stolen at Trabuco Hills High fundraiser

MISSION VIEJO, Calif.

The Trabuco Hills High School water polo team held a rummage sale Saturday to buy new equipment and make repairs to their venue.

Coach Sean McMahon said they advertised the fundraiser and even had kids on the street with car wash-type signs in order to draw more people.

As they began wrapping up that day, someone noticed that the money was missing. Someone had made off with the profits.

"We all looked in bags that maybe it got thrown into, but once we finished all the bags it wasn't there," goalie Cameron Erikson said.

The team is now trying to come up with the funds it needs to buy new equipment, a team bench and shade for the cheering section.

After the theft, the team wrote a letter to the community thanking them for their support and asking them again for their help.

"We've got several thousands worth of needs and we don't have the money now," McMahon said.

The /*Orange County Sheriff's Department*/ says it has a person of interest in the case and is reviewing surveillance video.

Besides losing the money to a thief, the team is on the hook for purchases made to host the sale.
