Target, which primarily uses plastic bags, is offering reusable shopping bags at 50 cents per bag. Stores like Rite Aid will offer paper bags at 10 cents per bag. Other stores like Vons or Albertsons will be giving out reusable bags if you spend a certain amount of money at their stores.
The ban enacted by the Long Beach City Council in May is an effort to reduce litter and plastic waste in water ways and storm drains and reduce waste transported to landfills.
Some shoppers said always remember to bring a reusable bag with them may pose a problem.
"I think it's a real inconvenience to do that and most times, I probably will not," said Los Angeles resident Rick Beecham. "I see a lot of people do it, but for me, it's a real inconvenience to have to carry a bag, constantly keep one in the car and remember to bring in a reusable bag."
Businesses not offering perishable goods like clothing stores and sporting goods outlets are exempt from the bag ban.
