The shooting happened about 1 p.m. Sunday in the 13500 block of Doty Avenue, a densely populated neighborhood, according to the Hawthorne Police Department.
Police said both men were inside a car when they were shot. Investigators spent the afternoon examining the car and collecting evidence.
Authorities did not have information on a suspect.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide unit took over the investigation, as they do for homicide investigations in Hawthorne.
