Weight training may help smokers quit w/o gaining weight

LOS ANGELES

In a new study, 16 percent of smokers who completed a 12-week resistance training program not only quit smoking, but also lost weight and body fat.

That's compared to 8 percent in the control group who quit smoking, but gained weight and body fat.

More research is needed before resistance training can be used as a clinical treatment to stop smoking.

The study is online in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.
