Sean Hayes will make his big return to television with an NBC comedy series about fatherhood.

The former "Will & Grace" star will be working with "Rescue Me" co-creator Peter Tolan on the series, which is still in the development stage, but will follow two gay men raising a 12-year-old, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Earlier in the month, Hayes Tweeted a message to his followers about developing the project.

"Yes. I'm very excited to report that I'm working with @nbc to develop a sitcom that I will star in next year," Hayes wrote on his official Twitter page on Monday. "More to come! Stay tuned!"

NBC's entertainment chief Robert Greenblatt reportedly confirmed the project to reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour earlier this month.

Hayes has stepped behind the cameras recently, producing series like NBC's upcoming fall show "Grimm" and TV Land's "Hot in Cleveland." He also starred opposite Kristin Chenoweth in "Promises, Promises" on Broadway in 2010.

In April, it was reported that Hayes had been cast as Larry in the "Three Stooges" movie directed by The Farrelly Brothers. Will Sasso of "$#*! My Dad Says" and "MADtv" fame will play Curly and "24" actor Chris Diamantopoulos will play Moe. The movie will reportedly be divided into half-hour vignettes featuring the slapstick trio.

Hayes has appeared in several movies like "Pieces of April" and "The Cat in the Hat," but this will be the actor's first starring role in a feature. Filming began in April and ended in late July.
