Investigators determined Hance went to a firing range days before the shootings and practiced using a .45-caliber handgun he bought at a pawn shop, WEWS-TV reported.
"(Hance) really didn't know how to use the weapon," Lt. Luke Marchmon said. "He went to a firing range to practice, but really didn't know how to use it. He had to be instructed on how to use that weapon."
Police say Hance didn't indicate he was planning to harm anyone.
Investigators have been trying to piece together a timeline of the shootings and understand a motive.
Hance's girlfriend, with whom he stayed, was injured in the shootings but survived. She has remained in a hospital, and police have not been able to question her, the station reported.
Investigators found Hance previously had minor disagreements with a family involved in the shootings. The family once asked Hance to stop using a garden tiller late at night, and Hance had become upset after a child from the family fired a BB gun near his girlfriend's home, the TV station said.
But police still aren't sure what sparked the shootings.
"Who does that because they have a dispute with a neighbor or they're upset with a neighbor?" Marchmon said.
