American Airlines flight makes emergency landing at LAX

August 21, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
Passengers and crew on an American Airlines flight from Louisville, Kentucky, were forced to make an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The plane landed safely on the airport's southernmost runway shortly after 2 a.m. Some sparks shot from under the right-side of the plane, but apparently no one was injured. The plane had 197 people on board.

The pilot reported a problem with the airliner's right landing gear. Air traffic controllers cleared a runway and had firefighters standing by before the plane touched down.

Correction: In an earlier version of the story, we stated that the plane dumped jet fuel over the ocean in preparation for the landing, but the Boeing 757 does not have that capability.
