Two members of the Riverside Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) were deployed to the East Coast to assist in relief efforts in advance of Hurricane Irene.

Riverside Fire Captain Jeff Loveland and Riverside Fire Dept. Division Chief and USAR Program Manager Dave Lesh were activated as part of the FEMA White Incident Support Team, according to the city of Riverside.

Loveland was dispatched Thursday at 5 p.m. PT, and Lesh was activated at 8 a.m. Friday.

Loveland will be staged in Herndon, Virginia, and will manage and maintain USAR communication systems.

Lesh will assist with the coordination response in Washington, D.C.

Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge commented, "Riverside is proud of its USAR team and our ability to provide needed support for our neighbors across the country."

Hurricane Irene was projected to reach the North Carolina coast Saturday morning.
