Investigators say 64-year-old Robert List was crossing the street on 170th Street just south of Avenue O when he was hit by a pickup truck at about 8 p.m.
The driver of the pickup stopped, but List was then hit by another vehicle that left the scene.
One resident said List was well known in the community.
"He loved everybody. I mean, he greeted everybody with a beautiful smile, really just going to miss him," said Jo-An Colvard.
The suspect vehicle is described as a dark colored truck or SUV, possibly a Ford F150. Anyone with information is urged to call (800) TELL-CHP.
