Gene mutation linked w/ early breast cancer diagnosis

September 12, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
There could soon be big changes in how women with the highest risk for breast cancer are counseled and even screened.

Researchers say women with a specific gene mutation are being diagnosed with breast cancer almost eight years earlier than their mothers and aunts.

It's the BRCA gene.

Scientists say it's estimated that 5 to 10 percent of all breast cancers are associated with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations.

The findings are published online in Cancer.
