Officers shoot 2 dogs attacking owner

LONG BEACH, Calif.

Long Beach police officers were investigating a residence near Willow Street and Bellflower Boulevard at about 4 p.m., according to the department. The resident placed her two dogs in the garage while officers were at the residence.

The officers were informed by another resident the owner was being attacked by the dogs in the back yard. Officers found the two dogs violently attacking and biting the owner on the ground in the back yard.

The officers attempted to subdue the dogs using non-lethal force, but were not successful, according to the department.

One officer fired his handgun, causing the dogs to flee the area. The dogs remained a threat and both officers shot both dogs, according to the department.

One dog died at the scene. The other was hospitalized for treatment.

The dogs' owner was hospitalized for multiple bites to the torso.
