Arrest in shooting death of San Bernardino toddler

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.

Authorities said the 19-year-old suspect was arrested just two blocks from the shooting scene during a chase a little after 5 p.m. Wednesday. Police initially said the suspect was not related to the shooting, but they said Thursday that he was linked to the shooting.

San Bernardino resident Brandon Taray Barnes was charged with one count of murder and seven counts of attempted murder. He could face 305 years to life in prison if convicted.

A weapon had not been recovered Thursday.

Nylah Franco-Torrez was shot and killed on Monday after a man opened fire in front of a house in the 1300 block of North D Street. Police say the shooting was a revenge attack after one of the occupants in the home stopped the suspect from beating a woman in an alleyway.

Along with killing Nylah, the shooting also left a 22-year-old pregnant woman and another child wounded. The mother is in stable condition, but the girl, who was shot in the head, remains in critical condition.

A makeshift memorial of photos, stuffed animals and balloons in front of the home continued to grow daily.
