Ventura pursuit, hit-and-run ends in arrest

VENTURA, Calif.

Ventura police received calls about some suspects casing vehicles on Glen Ellen Drive near Carol Street at shortly before 4 a.m. Friday. Responding officers spotted a suspicious vehicle leaving the area and tried to pull it over.

The driver of the car refused to yield, and a chase got under way.

The pursuit went through residential neighborhoods near the Pacific View Mall and spilled onto Thompson Boulevard. The suspect rammed into another car waiting behind a red light at the intersection of Seaward Avenue and Thompson Boulevard. The driver of that car was not seriously injured.

The crash did not stop the suspect, who continued to evade police. The chase reached speeds of 70 to 90 mph. When the suspect reached Telegraph Road, he ignored road closure signs and crashed the car into a concrete barricade.

That's when the suspect tried to flee on foot, but he was quickly caught a few feet away from the wrecked car.

The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Terry Bowkett of Ventura, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Bowkett was placed under arrest for felony evading and violating parole.
