Cathedral City would-be carjacker arrested

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.

The incident happened at the intersection of Date Palm and Dinah Shore drives at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

The victim told authorities that while he was stopped at a red light, he noticed a black Lincoln Navigator pull up behind him. He said a man got out of that car, walked up to his window and threatened him with a handgun, telling him to get out of the vehicle.

That's when the victim said he sped through the intersection and dialed 911.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, authorities tracked down a black Navigator in the 68500 block of Ramon Road. During a search of the car, police found a gun. Police said the victim later positively identified the suspect as the man who threathened him.

The suspect, 26-year-old Marcos Anthony Espinoza of Cathedral City, was booked into the Larson Justice Center in Indio. He is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail.

The victim was not harmed in this incident.
