Red-flag warning has firefighters on alert

CHATSWORTH, LOS ANGELES

Fire officials reminded residents to be ready and to be vigilant during a Friday news conference to announce the start of fire season, which is generally September when the Santa Ana winds kick up.

Los Angeles City Fire Chief Brian Cummings said all 102 fire stations throughout the city are prepared. Fire officials have water-dropping heli-tankers on standby in the event of a potential fire.

"We got late notification today of a red-flag warning for winds and possible dry lightning here in the Los Angeles area," Cummings said.

Officials encouraged residents living near hillsides to be mindful of their brush clearance and to have valuables organized in the event of a fire evacuation order.

There have been several fires over the last several months in L.A. and L.A. County.
