Ventura air units respond to multiple calls

VENTURA, Calif.

A medical evacuation call in Quatal Canyon brought Air Squad 9 to the rescue of an elderly woman at a ranch in the canyon early in the day, according to the department.

After completing that call, Air Squad 9 was summoned by the Coast Guard off the coast of Santa Cruz Island to investigate a possible fuel leak in a boat. The helicopter took photographs for the Coast Guard to help assess the damage and response.

Air Squad 9 was then called to locate and rescue an injured mountain-biker on Lizard Rock in Wildwood Park. The helicopter transported the victim to Los Robles Regional Medical Center.

Air Squad 9 was called back to Wildwood Park later in the day to assist in the rescue of a hiker suffering heat exhaustion.

Around the same time, Helicopter 6 was dispatched to a robbery at a Chase Bank branch in Camarillo. Air Squad 9 joined 6 shortly afterward. An hour-long aerial search failed to locate a suspect.

Helicopter crews are composed of sheriff's deputies and firefighters, according to the sheriff's department.
