The incident happened Saturday afternoon in the 300 block of Arneill Road when the father was trying to unload a handgun and it accidentally went off, said Ventura County sheriff's officials.
The son was shot in the upper torso and was transported to an area hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries.
No charges were filed. The incident was under investigation.
