Downey fire turns into officer-involved shooting

DOWNEY, Calif.

Authorities said officers were assisting firefighters with a palm tree fire at Firestone Boulevard and Old River School Road when they spotted a man near the scene shortly before 7 p.m.

Officers approached the man to inquire if he had any information about the fire, but a confrontation occurred where the man raised a stick he had in his hand, police said.

The man then allegedly produced a knife and charged at the officers, and both officers opened fire.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been released.

The shooting is under investigation.
