The affected models are Bravia 40-inch TVs manufactured in 2007 and 2008.
So far there have been no problems with the TVs in the U.S. There have been 11 incidents in Japan, though none involved injuries or damage beyond the TVs..
Sony says the defect can trigger overheating, smoke and melting parts.
