Woman gets probation, rehab for OC hate crime

WESTMINSTER, Calif.

Jennifer Renee Vanveldhuizen, 36, San Diego, pleaded guilty to one felony count of hate crime battery causing injury.

Authorities said on Oct. 3, Vanveldhuizen approached the 50-year-old street maintenance worker in the downtown Huntington Beach area and started yelling racial slurs at him. She then punched him in the face without provocation.

Vanveldhuizen was sentenced to three years of probation, 90 days in an alcohol rehabilitation program and a 10-week anger management program.

The court will reduce Vanveldhuizen's conviction to a misdemeanor once she completes the rehab and anger management programs.
