Japanese American vets given Congressional Gold Medal

WASHINGTON

The Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to more than 1,000 Japanese American military veterans in a ceremony honoring their extraordinary acts of service. The medal is the highest honor awarded by Congress.

Members of the military intelligence service, the 100th and 442nd Battalions were among the most decorated military units in U.S. history, congressional leaders said.

Leaders also said Japanese American contributions to the war are even more remarkable since their families were rounded up and confined by their own government.
