Obstacle course event aims to raise funds for men's health

LOS ANGELES

"R.O.C. race is the Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge which is a 5K, so it's a 3-mile obstacle course with about 18 different obstacles along the way," described Keith Cunningham, the director of R.O.C.

Held by Vavi Sport and Social Club of San Diego, this year's L.A. R.O.C. will have about 5,000 people dressed in crazy costumes and aims to raise money for a good cause.

"It's a costume race people. This is what people want to be wearing," said Cunningham.

VAVI chose to donate proceeds from this year's event to Movember

"Movember is a global nonprofit charity that raises funds and awareness for cancers affecting men, specifically prostate cancer," explained Movember spokesperson Daniel Acuna.

Acuna said Movember encourages men to get checked up and be serious about their health.

Movember, in lieu of November of course, is held in the same month. Guys start Nov. 1 clean shaven then get working on upper lip growth. Like the pink ribbon for breast cancer, the moustache acts as a conversation piece.

"Most people don't rock the mustache all year round. So when people see someone with the mustache, they ask, 'Well what's going on with the mustache?'" said Acuna.

The Saturday event at the Pomona Fairplex has four heats at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Participants pay $60 each or $225 for a four-person team.

While there are no mud pits, organizers do say participants should prepare to get wet. So bring a change of clothes for the big party following the race. If you want to be a lookie loo and stay dry, admission is free but parking is $10.
