Members of the California Faculty Association rallied on 10 campuses Tuesday and continued informational picketing Wednesday. The CFA represents about 23,000 CSU professors, lecturers, librarians, counselors, and coaches.
The union has already voted to strike at the East Bay and Dominguez Hills campuses November 17 in protest of the administration's decision to withhold raises negotiated in a previous contract.
It will be the first faculty strike since collective bargaining began in 1983.
A state-appointed fact-finding panel recently recommended that the CSU system provide a small portion of the raises, which would cost about $20 million the first year and $10 million in subsequent years.
The recommendation came inspite of a decision made three years ago to decrease state funding of higher education.
University officials said it would be financially irresponsible to pay the salary increases when the CSU system is losing $650 million in state funding this year.
