Regis Philbin, Katie Couric on special '20/20'

LOS ANGELES

Friday morning marks the end of an era in daytime television.

After 28 years of serving as a talk show host, Philbin is leaving the daily grind of morning television.

Thursday night, Philbin joined Couric to reflect on his long career; not just in the morning hours, but his 50-plus years in the entertainment industry as a whole.

Couric calls the special "a valentine" to a man who is a pioneer of the talk show genre.

"I think he's an incredibly authentic guy. Some people say that word has now been over used, but I think he puts on no airs. What you see is what you get. When he's on television, he's the same way as he is off television," said Couric.

"I'm not sure if he yells so much when the camera light isn't on, but I think sort of being true to yourself and being who you are and feeling comfortable in your own skin, I think that's really the best lesson that Regis has taught me," she added.

Couric and Philbin aired on "20/20" Thursday at 8 p.m. on ABC7.
