"Twi-hards" flocked to the theater to see "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" in its debut weekend. The film, which stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner had a huge opening weekend earning an estimated $139.5 million domestically and $283.5 million worldwide, according to the Associated Press.

The domestic total gives "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" the second-best debut weekend for the franchise, after the $142.8 million launch for 2009's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon."

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" depicts the wedding of Bella Swan, a human played by Kristen Stewart, and Robert Pattinson's character, vampire Edward Cullen, and the consequences of their union. The movie is the first part of the fourth installment of the fantasy romance series, which is based on the novels by Stephenie Meyer.

The movie also stars other returning cast members such as Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Kellan Lutz and Jackson Rathbone, who play Cullen's adopted siblings. Their parents are portrayed by Peter Facinelli and Elizabeth Reaser.

The previous three movies, the first of which was released in 2008, have grossed more than 1.8 billion worldwide. The second part of "Breaking Dawn" is due to be released on Nov. 16, 2012.

In a distant second is the animated dancing penguin sequel "Happy Feet 2," which earned an estimated $22 million over opening weekend. The total is just barely half of what the first film in the animated franchise earned in 2006.

In third place is last weekend's box office champ, "Immortals" with future Superman actor Henry Cavill. The film earned an additional $12.3 million in its second weekend at the box office, raising its domestic total to $53 million.

The Adam Sandler cross-dressing comedy "Jack and Jill" made an additional $12 million in its second weekend to come in fourth place, while the animated "Shrek" prequel "Puss in Boots" is still going strong. The film earned $10.7 million to round out the top five box office films.
