Owners of the Chevrolet Volt are being offered loaner cars as federal investigators look reports of battery fires.

On Monday, General Motors maintained that its electric car is safe.

But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says several Volts have experienced fires in their lithium-ion batteries after vehicle crashes.

GM said it is contacting more than 5,000 Volt owners in North America to reassure them, and to offer them loaners.
