OTRC: 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1' stays in top spot at slow weekend box office

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" is still bringing in movie goers who want to see the latest film in the teen supernatural romance franchise.

The movie stayed in first place for its third weekend, which ended up having one of the lowest turn outs of the year. "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" finished in first place with an estimated $16.9 million, according to the Associated Press. The weekend business raised its domestic three week total to $247.3 million.

The fourth movie in the hit vampire series stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson and depicts the consequences of their characters' union. The movie opened in theaters on November 18.

"The Muppets" also kept its second place ranking from last weekend. The family friendly film with Amy Adams and Jason Segel earned an additional $11.2 million in its second weekend of release. The domestic total for the movie now stands at an estimated $56.1 million.

Martin Scoreses's "Hugo" which was named the best film of the year by the National Board of Review this week, finished in third place with $7.6 million.

The film, which hit theaters on November 23, follows a young boy named Hugo (Asa Butterfield) who is orphaned after his parents die and uncle disappears. He is trying to rebuild a project of his father's and gets help from Isabelle (Chloe Moretz), the goddaughter of a toy shop owner who tried to stop Hugo. Its domestic total now stands at $25.2 million.

Family friendly movies also dominated the rest of the box office rankings for the weekend. "Arthur Christmas took fourth place with $7.4 million, while "Happy Feet Two" landed in fifth place with $6 million.
