He's put his mark now on all three "Transformers" movies.
"'Transformers' and the series, the entire franchise, have been without question the most complicated, challenging films of my career. There's no doubt about that," Russell said.
You could say sound transformed Russell's life. His love of sound started at a very early age. His dad, a longtime studio musician, tried to get him interested in playing music. But Russell was more in tune with mixing it.
"I found myself always playing with knobs, you know? If there was a bass and treble on a stereo, I was always trying to make it sound a little better, as long as I could remember," he said.
The Angelina Jolie action-thriller "Salt" accounts for one of Russell's 15 Oscar nominations. "The Rock," "Armageddon" and both "Spider Man" movies also got him nominations, but no trophies. At least not yet.
"I so ache for that win. I truly do. It's been an unbelievable run and I'm very grateful. It's a thrill each and every time it happens but, yeah, I would love that, to finally experience the other side," he said.
