A Turkish military helicopter crashed into a house in Afghanistan Friday, killing 16 people, 12 of whom were Turkish soldiers on board. Two girls on the ground also died.

The crash happened near the capital city of Kabul. The Sikorsky helicopter from Turkey was on a NATO mission. It clipped one house and then crashed into another home.

Turkey's foreign minister said the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing, but the reason was not immediately known. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
