Woman killed, man shot in face at Whittier apartment complex

WHITTIER, Calif.

The incident happened at the Lakeridge Apartments shortly after 4 a.m. on Thursday. Residents were shaken awake in what's usually a quiet and peaceful neighborhood.

"As soon as I went back to bed, I heard three bangs and squeaking tires that sped off," said area resident Rosa Samora. She said she heard deputies arrive on scene and went outside to find a wounded man in the parking lot.

"He had tattoos on his head and his chest and he was laying on the floor, but he was alive and the ambulance picked him up," she said. "That's all I've seen and they told us to get inside."

Sheriff's deputies say the man was shot in the face and was transported to an area hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Lt. Matthew Burson with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department said investigators found the body of a woman in another part of the apartment complex during a search of the premises. Authorities said the woman had a single gunshot wound, but they don't know what prompted the deadly shooting.

It remains unclear if there is a suspect is on the run or if the shooter was one of the victims. Detectives are going door-to-door trying to get more information from neighbors. It's unknown if the victims knew each other or if they were residents of the area or visitors.

The shooting occurred just across the street from Mill School on Workman Mill Road, but students are on spring break and are not attending classes this week.

If you have any information about this incident, you're urged to contact the L.A. County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
